Antonio Vivaldi
Gloria & Magnificat
Choir and Orchestra
Presentation
Just ordained as a priest, Don Antonio Vivaldi became in 1703 the violin master of the young girls at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. This institution welcomed orphans and illegitimate daughters of the Venetian aristocracy, offering them an advanced musical education. These young women formed a choir of singers among the world’s greatest virtuosos, as well as an instrumental ensemble, usually comprising thirty to forty musicians, and up to seventy on special occasions.
For more than thirty years, Vivaldi produced an impressive body of compositions for this institution, both instrumental and vocal, and oversaw their performance. While he excelled in the art of the concerto and opera, he surpassed himself in his sacred music. With their usual energy, Valentin Tournet and La Chapelle Harmonique capture Vivaldi’s exuberance—pure joy!
